Whether you're a renter chasing your full deposit back or a seller making a great final impression, a move-out clean is more thorough than a regular tidy. With the home empty, every surface is visible — so this is the time to get into the spots that are normally hidden by furniture. Here's a room-by-room checklist.
Kitchen
- Inside and outside of all cabinets and drawers
- Inside the oven, microwave, and refrigerator (defrost if needed)
- Stovetop, range hood, and backsplash degreased
- Sink and faucet scrubbed and shined
- Countertops and floor washed, including under where appliances sat
Bathrooms
- Tub, shower, and tile scrubbed; glass de-scaled
- Toilet cleaned inside and out, including the base
- Sink, vanity, and mirror polished
- Inside cabinets and drawers wiped
- Exhaust fan cover dusted; floor washed
Bedrooms & living areas
- Dust everything top to bottom — fan blades, shelves, sills, baseboards
- Wipe down doors, frames, light switches, and outlet covers
- Spot-clean walls for scuffs and marks
- Clean interior windows and tracks
- Vacuum carpet thoroughly (consider a deep extraction); mop hard floors
Don't forget the easy-to-miss spots
- Closets — shelves and floors
- Vents and return-air grilles
- Inside the washer/dryer area
- Garage sweep-out, if applicable
A tip on deposits
Landlords most often deduct for the kitchen, bathrooms, and carpets — so prioritize those. Take dated photos once you're done; they're invaluable if there's ever a dispute. And if you're short on time during an already-stressful move, a professional move-out clean is usually far cheaper than a withheld deposit. We handle move-in and move-out cleans across West Michigan and can turn a home around quickly.
