If your glass shower door looks permanently cloudy or your faucets have a chalky white crust, you're not doing anything wrong, you have hard water. Much of West Michigan does. Those spots are mineral deposits, mostly calcium and magnesium, left behind when hard water dries. The good news: they come off, and you can slow them down.
Why West Michigan is tough on surfaces
Our groundwater is naturally high in minerals, so every drop that dries on glass, chrome, or tile leaves a little deposit behind. Over time those layers build into the hazy film and hard white spots that a normal wipe won't budge. Windows, shower doors, faucets, and sinks take the worst of it.
What actually removes the stains
- White vinegar, warm distilled white vinegar dissolves fresh mineral deposits; soak a cloth and lay it on the spot for 10-15 minutes
- Baking soda paste, mix with a little water for gentle scrubbing on tougher buildup
- A dedicated lime and scale remover for heavy, long-standing crust
- A razor scraper or non-scratch pad for stubborn glass, used carefully and flat
A few cautions
- Never use vinegar or acids on natural stone like marble or granite, it etches the surface
- Test any acid on a small hidden spot first
- Avoid abrasive pads on shiny chrome and coated glass
- Never mix vinegar with bleach, it releases toxic fumes
How to keep them from coming back
- Squeegee the shower door after each use, this one habit does the most
- Wipe faucets and sinks dry after heavy use
- Clean glass and fixtures regularly so deposits never get a chance to build
- Consider a water softener for a whole-home fix
